Gingivitis Treatment with our Riverview Dentist

Gingivitis is a common and mild type of gum disease. The first symptoms of gingivitis are generally mild, so it is common for many people to be unaware of the problem. However, it is important that you take gingivitis seriously and promptly visit your dentist in Riverview for treatment.  Without prompt and appropriate treatment, gingivitis may lead to more serious forms of gum disease, which may result in tooth loss as well as serious physical health problems. Fortunately, gingivitis can be treated and reversed when it is caught in the early stages. So, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of gingivitis and to schedule an appointment with our dentist in Riverview, FL.

Symptoms of Gingivitis

When your gums are healthy, they are firm and pink in color. If you notice that your gums are red in color or puffy, it may be due to gingivitis. Keep in mind that gum disease is generally not painful, so you can have it without knowing it. Symptoms of gingivitis may include:

  • Receding gums (teeth will look larger than normal)
  • Gums bleeding during flossing and/or brushing
  • Gums are tender when touched
  • Teeth are separating and spaces may develop between teeth
  • Gums are swollen, soft and puffy
  • Experiencing a bad taste in your mouth
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Pus between teeth and gums
  • Loose teeth

Cause of Gingivitis

The most common cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene habits. Lack of brushing and flossing increases the amount of plaque on your teeth, which is a sticky, invisible substance that is made up of bacteria. Although your mouth naturally has some bacteria, when starches and sugars from the foods you eat interact with the natural bacteria, it causes plaque. When plaque is allowed to remain on teeth for longer than a couple of days, it starts to harden and then turns into tartar.

The mineral content in salvia may also cause tartar to form on teeth. Once there is tartar on your teeth, it is much more difficult to remove than plaque. The longer tartar and plaque remain on your teeth, the more irritation it causes on the gums and the base of your teeth, which is what causes your gums to bleed easily and become swollen.  Although plaque can generally be removed with regular flossing and brushing, tartar usually has to be removed with a professional cleaning.
