When even one tooth becomes infected, the pain and discomfort can be extremely severe. Fortunately, our Riverview and Apollo Beach dentist at Inspiration Dental offers a range of interventions and treatments to help get you out of pain and enjoying a high quality of life again.
Some of the symptoms of a tooth infection include:
The most common causes of tooth infections your dentist sees include tooth decay/cavities and cracks in the teeth.
To address an infected tooth, our dentist will first have to clean the area to get rid of the infection. Once clear, the tooth can then be repaired as required. The procedure differs from simply filling a cavity since tooth infections have spread to the inner area and root.
Because of this, a root canal will be required. The tooth will be drilled to the site of the infection to ensure it can be completely cleaned out. The canal of the tooth is cleaned out thoroughly using an antibacterial solution. The drilling of the root canal can be minor or major, depending upon the extent of the infection and the size of the tooth.
Once your dentist is certain the infection has been completely cleaned out, a crown can then be placed over the root to seal and protect it. In some cases, antibiotics will be required to ensure the infection will not spread and persist in other parts of the body.
There are ways to prevent and avoid tooth infection. The easiest and most important steps include brushing and flossing after each meal or at least twice per day. This can prevent or minimize the growth of bacteria in the mouth, which is the leading cause of cavities, tooth infection, and abscess
