Can't I just whiten my teeth at home?
While it is possible to find at-home whitening kits (they're usually available at grocery stores in the toothpaste aisle), it's important to realize that these at-home kits don't have the same whitening agent as we have access to in our office. Because the whitening agent isn't as strong, you may not achieve as noticeable results. When you have teeth whitening done in our office, you can rest assured not only that you'll see noticeable results, but that the procedure is being done safely by professionals as well.
Is whitening safe for my teeth
As long as it's done properly, there is no reason that a teeth whitening procedure should harm your teeth in any way. Many people have heard the myth that whitening will damage your enamel or cause tooth sensitivity. Generally, this occurs with people who have attempted at-home whitening and left the whitening agent on too long, thus causing damage to the gums and/or enamel. This is yet another reason we recommend having whitening done by a professional so you can avoid these potential risks.
How long will the results last
That all depends on how well you take care of your teeth following your whitening appointment. To prolong the results, we generally recommend that you use a whitening toothpaste at least twice a day, and that you floss at least once a day. This will help to prevent build-up that can cause your teeth to yellow. We also recommend that you avoid beverages that are known to stain teeth, such as coffee and red wine. If you do choose to consume these, try to brush your teeth or at least rinse with water shortly after.
What if I have crowns, veneers, or fillings
Keep in mind that whitening agent will not change the color of any fillings, veneers, or crowns. If this concerns you, speak with our dentist about having these replaced with a color that will more closely match your new smile.
